Though I wasn't homeschooled, I was raised in a fundamentalist church and attended a Christian school and Christian college, very close to Pierce's target audience. But I have to say, he just isn't that funny. I chuckled a few times, and grinned a few others. But that was about it. The book is very short and an easy read. It's a good primer to decide if you want to read his next two, longer books. I declined. I thought it was odd to have a different rating for the same book on two different sites, so I came up with my own scale below.

For the record, it is fairly close to Amazon's scale, but allows me to be consistent between the two sites. Maybe only 30 in a lifetime. One person found this helpful. Pierce's lighthearted memoir of coming of age inside the strange, awkward Christian fundamentalist home school movement is a quick read, both because it is a mere 84 s, and because the content is often hilariously tragic. Far, far too many of the author's struggles and thoughts are immediately relateable, for my own comfort anyway, and the rest was easy to identify.

One critical review against this book concerns the author's fascination with his own sexual awakening. I respectfully argue that the review misses the point; this book is about the context in which that awakening takes place. A second complaint is that there is little to no introspection, but I believe this is a strength. Pierce does not deride, blame or accuse, neither does he praise, defend or support.

He simply relates the facts, with humor, and lets you draw your own conclusions. I wish it were longer, perhaps a little more detailed, but on the flip side there is no fluff in this book.

Every is either funny, poignant, or both. The author's blog and Twitter is also excellent. This book kept me laughing out loud for its entirety, because what he said was so true! I highly recommend the sequel, "JV Superstar", which is even more hilarious. Though I went to public school much to my dismayI had many homeschooler friends and participated in Bible Quiz our teams were separated by gender though.

What the author remarked on in this book is so true, and that's what makes it hilarious.

He is highly talented, and I sure hope he publishes some more books! I kept expecting some anger or bitterness over the strictness of his homeschooled childhood, but he writes respectfully, if briefly, about his religiously conservative parents, and ultimately affectionately about his upbringing. I got a little grumpy about it, actually, and ended up having to face some personal bias against religious conservatism that I would have preferred to ignore in myself.

Personal issues aside, though, it was a really interesting and entertaining look hood much, much different from my own.

The author speaks my language with wit and insights from inside the Christian culture of that time. Although he crosses many boundries see his blog on "butt sin" he somehow manages to hang onto the baby while throwing out the bath water. It is really really funny if you identify with the setting - which I did. He does a great job of understanding what was ridiculous without sounding mean, and makes fun of himself as much as anything.

The humor reminds me of Adrian Plass's Sacred Diaries in that if you don't share a background with the author you probably won't get it, but if you do you will die laughing. This is the story of a kid who survived adolescence in the fundamentalist homeschool movement--and managed to keep his sense of humor. He tells his story in clear, matter-of-fact prose with a wonderful sense of absurdity. Eventually, he seems to have gotten over his awkwardness with women--according to his bio, he's now married with kids--but at the end of the book, he's still struggling.

Man, I could relate! I wish I could write like he does! Fun quick read. Doesn't actually have any homeschool sex. I expected a little more discussion on Clinton's foreign policy since that was an important era for world affairs; Pierce doesn't even discuss Bosnia or Kosovo.

Also, conspicuously avoids "A Beka" and "Bob Jones" curriculum debates, obviously scared to tackle controversial subjects. Anyway, read the book, enjoy it, just know what you're getting. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I was not homeschooled myself but I grew up in a very conservative evangelical environment. I also struggled with the whole dating scene as Matthew did. Very funny book. I wish author had combined his college experiences in the same book.
